Tim Leshan, Chief External Relations and Advocacy Officer at ASPPH, moderated the event, which featured distinguished panelists Mark Mioduski, Partner at Cornerstone Government Affairs; Dr. Daniele Fallin, Dean of the Emory University Rollins School of Public Health; and Dr. Boris Lushniak, Dean of the University of Maryland School of Public Health and Chair of the ASPPH Advocacy Committee.

The webinar explored the current political landscape and its implications for public health policy, research funding, and education. Panelists provided insight into potential changes and strategies for public health professionals to adapt.

Mark Mioduski highlighted the uncertainty surrounding NIH and CDC funding, cautioning that budget changes could significantly impact public health research. Dr. Fallin discussed the proposed 15% indirect cost (IDC) cap at NIH, emphasizing its potential to undermine essential research infrastructure. She reassured students that, despite federal hiring challenges, opportunities exist in the private sector, non-profits, and local health agencies.

Dr. Lushniak urged the public health community to remain engaged and advocate for policies that protect academic public health. He expressed concern over increasing restrictions on public health topics, reinforcing the need for institutions to uphold scientific integrity.

The webinar concluded with a Q&A session, where panelists reiterated the importance of legislative engagement, institutional resilience, and advocacy.

ASPPH will continue to monitor policy developments and provide guidance to help members navigate this evolving landscape.
