Meet the Team: ASPPH’s Newest Staff Members

New Hires ASPPH

We are excited to welcome five new staff members to ASPPH, including one grant-funded position. We are committed to finding the best possible candidates to support our work in advancing academic public health, and we attract talent from a diverse pool of applicants, allowing us to embrace the tenets of gender, racial, ethnic, and geographical representation in the workplace. Due in part to our generously being awarded grants and receiving funding, we were able to fill the following new positions.

Chad Barbee

Chad Barbee is a Web Developer II with over 20 years of experience in web design, development, and optimization. He will play a key role in delivering modern WordPress websites and features using a human-centered software development lifecycle and supporting grant programs within the ASPPH Center for Public Health Workforce Development (CPHWSD).

Before joining ASPPH, Chad was instrumental in the redesign and relaunch of the National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE) website, leading efforts to develop a custom design, enhance site functionality, and improve SEO and performance. His background in disease intervention certification and collaboration with organizations like NBPHE aligns with ASPPH’s mission to advance academic public health and workforce development.

Mary Beth Carroll

Mary Beth Carroll joins ASPPH as the Director of Student Pathways and Recruitment. Most recently, she served as the Associate Director of Recruitment and Admissions at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. With a longstanding background in higher education, she has led the streamlining of recruitment and admissions processes, created a long-standing volunteer ambassador program, and developed strategic partnerships to enhance student engagement and recruitment efforts.

Passionate about fostering meaningful connections between prospective students and academic institutions, Mary Beth is committed to advancing innovative recruitment strategies that support the growth and success of future public health leaders. She holds a bachelor’s degree in communication from Michigan State University and a master’s degree in educational leadership and student affairs from Eastern Michigan University.

Maura Gildea

As a Fellow in the External Relations and Advocacy Division (ERA) at ASPPH, Maura serves as the key coordinator for the department, providing support across various strategic initiatives. Her role focuses on communication, advocacy, and branding efforts in support of the organization’s missions and strategic plan.

Maura earned her Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health through the 4+1 MPH Program, focusing on Behavioral and Community Health Sciences. During her time at Pittsburgh, Maura interned with Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania’s educational department, gaining valuable experience in community health and education.

Passionate about health equity, public health policy, and addressing socioeconomic determinants of health, Maura is dedicated to breaking down barriers to healthcare access. She is excited to contribute to ASPPH’s initiatives and engage with members and community partners.

Alex Miranda

Alex serves as ASPPH’s IT Helpdesk Coordinator and is a dedicated professional with over six years of experience in the IT sector and an additional three years contributing to the public health field.

Multiple certifications support his educational and professional journey and attest to his skills and dedication to both industries. He is committed to lifelong learning and consistently seeks to enhance his IT knowledge to better integrate cutting-edge solutions into his work.

At ASPPH, he is integral to the operations team, specializing in triaging tickets and providing both remote and in-person support to users. This role allows Alex to combine his technical skills with his passion for helping people, ensuring that each interaction not only resolves technical issues but also contributes positively to their experience.

Jeff Slezak

Jeff Slezak currently serves as the Director of Accounting for the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH), where he oversees the company’s accounting functions and provides support to the various operational teams.
