Explore Free Teaching Resources for The Formula for Better Health

ASPPH encourages faculty and educators to explore free teaching resources developed to accompany Dr. Tom Frieden’s book, The Formula for Better Health: How to Save Millions of Lives — Including Your Own. Previously promoted through ASPPH’s IDEA Institute eLearn platform, these materials provide practical tools for integrating evidence-based public health strategies into undergraduate and graduate coursework.

Building on the book’s See, Believe, Create framework, the resources help students explore how public health professionals can translate evidence into action, prevent disease, and strengthen health systems. Through real-world examples, structured discussions, and applied analysis, the materials connect foundational public health concepts with the challenges of public health practice.

Available resources include a comprehensive instructor guide featuring suggested lectures, readings, discussion prompts, and assignments, along with adaptable sample syllabi for undergraduate and graduate public health courses. Interactive exercises further support student engagement and practical application of the framework.

Designed for flexibility, the materials can be incorporated into existing courses or used to develop standalone modules focused on specific public health concepts. All resources are available at no cost, with opportunities for instructors to adapt and share them under the applicable Creative Commons licenses.

ASPPH encourages member institutions to explore these materials and share them with faculty and colleagues to support innovative teaching, strengthen public health education, and prepare the next generation of public health professionals.
