ASPPH Partners with NHIT to Launch NHIT Inspired™ AI Academy

ASPPH is partnering with the National Health IT Collaborative for the Underserved (NHIT) to launch the NHIT INSPIRED™ AI Academy x ASPPH, a 10-week experiential learning program designed to equip undergraduate and graduate public health students with the artificial intelligence, data, and innovation skills needed to serve underrepresented communities. NHIT CEO Luis Belén notes that the collaboration expands NHIT’s reach to train students across the country and connects data, technology, and real-world application to advance health equity.

The program builds on ASPPH’s broader AI for Public Health initiative, which supports the responsible integration of AI across public health education, research, and practice.

The program is open to students enrolled at ASPPH member institutions and ASPPH Undergraduate Network institutions, with the inaugural Fall 2026 cohort accepting applications through July 15, 2026. Students will work in teams on real-world public health challenges, developing AI-driven solutions in areas such as chronic disease prevention, maternal and child health, food insecurity, and digital health access. In addition to hands-on capstone experience, participants receive mentorship from public health, AI, and healthcare leaders and gain direct exposure to national organizations, academic institutions, and community stakeholders. Three cohorts of up to 25 students each will be offered annually across fall, spring, and summer terms. This is a primarily remote experience with hybrid option for D.C.-area students to work in NHIT’s offices in Arlington, VA.

Organizations interested in supporting the NHIT INSPIRED™ AI Academy x ASPPH can explore sponsorship opportunities, with those wishing to partner on the Fall 2026 cohort confirming their interest by July 15, 2026. Sponsorship benefits include brand visibility across ASPPH and NHIT platforms, direct engagement with capstone teams, and recognition at the 2027 ASPPH Annual Meeting.
