ASPPH-Member Funding Opportunity in Support of CDC’s National Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS) Certification Project

Funding Opportunity Support of CDC’s National DIS Certification Project, with diverse raised hands and workforce logo below

ASPPH is seeking member responses to a new Request for Proposal (RFP) for Developing a Recruitment and Retention Toolkit for the Disease Intervention Workforce. ASPPH members would collaborate in support of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National DIS Certification Project. The Project contributes to CDC’s workforce capacity efforts to improve public health services provided to communities by disease intervention professionals. Intentions to submit a proposal are due by 5:00 PM ET on February 10, 2025, and application packages are due by 5:00 PM ET on March 10, 2025.

Objective

The purpose of this Request for Proposal (RFP) is to identify a CEPH-accredited, ASPPH-member school or program of public health to collaborate in support of the CDC’s National Disease Intervention Certification Project. In cooperation with ASPPH and the National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE), the CDC is developing a voluntary disease intervention specialist certification program called Certified in Disease Intervention (CDI).

To develop the CDI, the National Board of Public Health Examiners is conducting a job task analysis (JTA) of the disease intervention workforce. A Job Task Analysis (JTA) helps to identify all the tasks involved in a given job. With this information, employers can better understand what knowledge, skills, and abilities are needed. This helps employers write accurate job descriptions, be strategic in their workforce recruitment efforts, set clear expectations for employees, and evaluate employee performance. Information from a JTA can also help determine what type of training or support is needed to best perform the job.

The aim of this project is to develop a toolkit for utilizing the 2025 Disease Intervention Job Task Analysis results and core competencies to advance recruitment and retention of the Disease Intervention workforce. This toolkit will strengthen and support hiring, onboarding, performance evaluation, retention, and professional development policies and procedures at state, Tribal, local, and territorial health departments, and other disease intervention employers.
