Congressional Budget Update: Leadership Motivated to Avoid Government Shutdown

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) aims to avoid a government shutdown, a shared concern among Democrats and most Republicans and is preparing for a vote next week on a short-term funding bill, ensuring the government remains operational during extended funding negotiations. However, GOP hard-liners are pushing House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to abandon a funding deal with Democrats.

Congressional leaders reached a $1.66 trillion agreement on the federal budget for fiscal year (FY) 2024 on Sunday, January 7, potentially leading to a broader government funding compromise soon. The first deadline for some federal agencies is on January 19 and the second deadline, which affects funding for key public health agencies and programs, is February 2

ASPPH is continuing advocacy efforts to ensure public health programs important to members receive the necessary federal support. A government shutdown is still possible due to unresolved policy issues and conservative demands to attach Republican border reforms to spending legislation. However, if Congress cannot come to an agreement soon, there is a possibility of another continuing resolution (CR) until March 2024.
