Johnston King serves as the Director of Recruitment and Admissions at the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH). His primary responsibilities include overseeing member participation in the SOPHAS application system, and This Is Public Health (TIPH) recruitment events. In his role he works collaboratively with ASPPH members to ensure that the SOPHAS application provides application reviewers with an efficient and fair review process. He also manages the relationship with Liaison, ASPPH’s technology partner, to remove barriers in the application process for prospective students and create a more inclusive application experience. In addition, Johnston organizes recruitment efforts to support members’ student recruitment including virtual and in-person This Is Public Health Graduate School Fairs. Johnston manages the SOPHAS/Recruitment Advisory Council and the SOPHAS/Recruitment Assembly, which drive innovation in recruitment and admissions across public health, and provide professional development opportunities for member staff.
Prior to ASPPH, Johnston worked as the Director of Admissions for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health. During his time at UNC Gillings, he oversaw recruitment and the application review process for both the on campus and online Master of Public Health degree. Johnston collaborated with the UNC Gillings Office of Inclusive Excellence to create an Equity Advocacy in Application Review training that incorporated implicit bias training into holistic application review.
Johnston holds a Master of Arts in Education – Adult Education from East Carolina University and a Bachelor of Art in English from Barton College.
