Through research, students learn to ask critical questions, analyze evidence, challenge assumptions, and develop innovative solutions to complex problems. These are essential competencies for every public health professional.
The most significant advances in public health, medicine, and health systems have emerged when evidence challenged conventional wisdom and inspired new ways of thinking. Today, we find ourselves at another pivotal moment. Health systems are confronting unprecedented challenges—including demographic shifts, climate change, emerging infectious diseases, workforce shortages, technological disruption, and growing health inequities—but they also have extraordinary opportunities to transform. The critical question is no longer whether research matters, but how research can guide health systems through this period of profound change.
One of the greatest risks facing health systems today is making decisions based solely on tradition, intuition, or political pressure. Evidence-based decision-making is no longer optional; it is a strategic imperative. Research helps leaders answer fundamental questions:

We prepare future leaders to think critically, generate evidence, solve complex problems, build partnerships, and navigate uncertainty with confidence and integrity. The relationship between academia and practice has never been more important, as sustainable health systems increasingly depend on continuous learning and the translation of knowledge into action.
Ultimately, health systems are not defined by their buildings, budgets, or technologies. They are defined by people—their ability to generate knowledge, make informed decisions, build trust, and improve the health of the communities they serve. Governments, universities, healthcare organizations, philanthropic foundations, and the private sector must work together to strengthen research capacity, promote evidence-based leadership, foster cross-sector partnerships, and cultivate the next generation of innovators. By doing so, we can build sustainable, resilient, and transformative health systems capable of improving health today while preparing for the challenges of tomorrow.
