Responding to the Next Public Health Emergency: A Scenario-Based Bipartisan Dialogue

June 24 @ 12:00 pm 1:30 pm

As part of the ASPPH Public Health Listening Tour, ASPPH, in partnership with the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), will host a hybrid, scenario-based dialogue examining how public health leaders make decisions in real time. The event will take place at the Sanford Auditorium on the USUHS campus in Bethesda, MD, on June 24 from 12:00 – 1:30 PM ET

The session will be introduced by James Mancuso, MD, DrPH (USUHS) and moderated by Joe Palca, PhD, an award-winning former NPR science correspondent known for his work in science communication and storytelling.

This interactive discussion will feature a multidisciplinary panel responding to a dynamic scenario involving the emergence of a drug-resistant bacterial infection in the Washington, DC region, highlighting challenges such as resource constraints, misinformation, cross-sector coordination, and public trust.

Guided through phases of response, escalation, and resolution, the dialogue will explore the tradeoffs, ethical considerations, and communication strategies that shape real-world public health decision-making.

The session will conclude with audience engagement and reflections on lessons for future public health practice.

Attending In Person

Because this event will be held on a military installation, attendees who do not have a valid Department of the Navy (DoN) access card must complete a SECNAV visitor access form and submit it to fotini.streett@usuhs.edu for security clearance prior to the event. Individuals with a valid, unexpired DoN card may use their card for installation access and do not need to complete the form.

To protect personal information, completed forms may be password-protected (with the password sent separately), submitted via a DoD Safe link, or coordinated by phone as instructed.

Visitor Entrance: Gate 1 Visitor Control Center, 102 Wood Road, Bethesda, MD 20889. Attendees with installation access may also enter through Gate 2 near the Medical Center Metro Station (Red Line).
