Kyli Patterson

What inspired you to study public health?

I always wanted to work in the medical field but was more passionate about the “why” behind someone’s health status. My undergraduate academic advisor in Biology suggested I take an intro to public health course and I very quickly realized I wanted to change my major and pursue public health.

What has been the single most rewarding experience of your career/studies so far?

Passing the Certified in Public Health Exam! I was able to prove to myself that I had gained a wealth of knowledge over the past 5 years and truly am a Master of Public Health.

Where did you do your practicum? What was it about?

St. Louis Integrated Health Network. I worked with the data analysis and evaluation planning team to analyze social determinants of health and barriers to care that impact a patient’s likelihood of attending their scheduled doctor appointments.

What do you hope to accomplish in your career?

I hope to work as an Infection Preventionist at a hospital to prevent and control healthcare-associated infections.

Advice:

I wish someone had told me to join professional organizations as a student, including APIC, APHA, etc. This is a great way to network, attend conferences, and have new experiences you wouldn’t get outside of these organizations.
