The complex connections between climate change and public health are increasingly evident, with systemic pressures like food insecurity, population displacement, and political instability impacting health outcomes worldwide. Inspired by the work of the late climate scholar Anthony McMichael, the emerging field of climate-related system failures and public health vulnerabilities highlights the urgent need to address the risks exacerbated by human-induced climate shifts.
This new research topic seeks to explore these challenges, focusing on how climate-related system failures affect public health and examining strategies to adapt and mitigate these effects.
This initiative invites contributions across a range of pressing themes:
- Population migration and displacement: Examining the health vulnerabilities arising from climate-induced migration
- Water scarcity and rising sea levels: Understanding the public health effects of lowered water tables, drought, and flooding
- Food system disruptions: Investigating the implications of drastically altered agriculture and aquaculture systems on nutrition and health
- Misinformation and disinformation: Addressing the role of inaccurate narratives in exacerbating health vulnerabilities related to climate change
- Political instability: Exploring the impact of weak or absent political commitment on public health resilience
- Public health system pressures: Assessing the challenges facing health systems under increasing climate stress
