We at ASPPH join the Gerber family and academic public health community in mourning Dr. Daniel “Dan” Gerber, senior lecturer in community health education and former associate dean of academic affairs at the University of Massachusetts Amherst School of Public Health and Health Sciences, who died December 18, 2025. Dr. Gerber was also a member and leader at ASPPH in the scholarship of teaching and learning, serving on the inaugural task force and supporting its Teaching Working Group from 2018-2021.
Dr. Gerber earned the highest ASPPH award for undergraduate teaching, the Riegelman Excellence Award, in 2018. Dr. Gerber is also credited as one of the earliest voices to call for the inclusion of pedagogy in the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) standards, instituted for the first time in 2016. He also served as an esteemed and collegial member of ASPPH’s Academic Affairs Section, inspiring fellow leaders in education with his passion and practical examples of how to teach so that students truly learn.
Dr. Gerber’s animated and enthusiastic collaboration and mentoring of colleagues’ efforts to ensure the public’s health will continue to endure for generations to come. To assist in this legacy, the UMass Amherst Foundation has established a scholarship, the Dr. Daniel Gerber Experiential Learning Opportunities Fund, in his name.
