Supporting Responsible AI Integration in Public Health Education and Practice

To support our members in navigating the evolving educational landscape, ASPPH recently hosted the webinar Incorporating GenAI into the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning as part of our ASPPH Presents series. During this session, ASPPH member experts highlighted how Generative AI can be leveraged to promote student engagement, critical thinking, and evidence-based learning, which are key skills for a tech-enabled public health workforce.

Featured speakers Dr. Amie Patchen, Lecturer at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine Department of Public & Ecosystem Health, and Dr. Jonathan Zaccarini, Digital Learning Support Specialist at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, shared innovative approaches to integrating generative AI tools into the public health curriculum.

Dr. Patchen discussed a color-coded evidence mapping method used to support students in constructing rigorous, evidence-based written arguments. “Color coding added a layer of analysis that improved student comprehension and our ability to assess learning,” she explained. Dr. Zaccarini highlighted how structured student reflection on ChatGPT-generated essays can deepen understanding and critical evaluation of content. “We wanted students to learn with the tool, not be led by it,” he said.

Recognizing the urgency of guiding ethical and effective AI integration, we have also launched the Taskforce for the Responsible and Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence in Public Health Research, Practice, and Education.
