ASPPH partners with many practice organizations and agencies to support and develop the public health workforce. Together, ASPPH and our partners are reimaging public health workforce recruitment, training, and retention.

Public Health Foundation: Council on Linkages
The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) is a collaborative of 24 national public health and population health organizations. Since 1992, the Council on Linkages has worked to further academic/practice collaboration to ensure a well-trained, competent workforce and the development and use of a strong evidence base for public health practice. As a member of the Council on Linkages, ASPPH participated in the development of the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals.
National Consortium for Public Health Workforce Development
The National Consortium for Public Health Workforce Development works collaboratively to ensure the public health workforce has the skills, resources, and support it needs to address the social determinants of health and achieve health equity. The Consortium unites state, Tribal, local, and territorial public health leaders; universities and training providers; philanthropy; federal agencies; the public health workforce; community members; policy makers; and partners in healthcare and other sectors to strategically align collective actions, support and promote new and relevant research, facilitate shared learning, and improve understanding of the urgency and significance of a well-trained, well-resourced, and diverse public health workforce.
As a member of the Steering Committee, ASPPH offered guidance in developing the National Consortium’s common agenda, clarifying the challenges, identifying the goals, and defining the strategies the Consortium will undertake. Collectively, they determined that an equity-centered approach was an imperative.
The Consortium for Workforce Research in Public Health (CWORPH) in the Center for Public Health Systems (CPHS) at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health is a public health workforce research consortium consisting of six ASPPH member schools of public health. Each member brings decades of expertise specific to public health workforce in the United States, as well as the research capacity of a highly-ranked university, making CWORPH uniquely qualified to support and evaluate large-scale public health workforce development efforts.
The consortium’s advisory structure includes engagement and collaborative partnerships with 10 national practice-oriented partners, including organizations with members in health departments and public health associations across the United States. As a national practice-based partner, ASPPH assists CWORPH to assure a well-trained and diverse public health workforce with capacity to address both chronic and acute public health needs.
As a CDC PH LEADS national partner association, ASPPH receives funding through OE22-2201: Strengthening the Population & Public Health Workforce Pipeline Cooperative Agreement to strengthen data science and leadership training programs, assess and design a recruitment approach for a diverse public health workforce, and provide quality applied learning experiences in governmental public health at the national, state, and local levels.
