ASPPH was saddened to learn about the shooting this week that led to the senseless deaths of three students at Michigan State University, whose Master of Public Health College of Human Medicine is one of our members. These shootings and lives lost speak directly to ASPPH’s strong stance that gun violence is a public health emergency.
This violence touches every community and leaves long-lasting ripple effects that can be devastating. We are confident that a public health approach to the firearm violence problem that elevates strategies rooted in empirical evidence and invests in the next generation of leaders for long-term change can contribute to the evolving national movement that focuses on addressing gun violence.
