Simone Pierre, MPH

St. George's University Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine
Preventative Medicine

What inspired you to study public health?

I believe public health is the true medicine and it is the only way we can create healthy societies. Being a medical doctor has led me to see that medicine only scratches the surface of health, often times we are only focused on tertiary health care with no focus on primary and very little focus on secondary health care. The study of public health forces us to look outside of the box and outside of the medical science to understand health and how it affects the individual and society.

What has been the single most rewarding experience of your career/studies so far?

Being able to meet and connect with persons from all over the world to work on several projects that have had an actual impact on the Grenadian community.

What do you hope to accomplish in your career?

It is my hope that with this degree, I can have a better background to help the healthcare system of my country. I will be able to marry the two, the science and the theories to help enact change in my country.

Advice:

Go in with an open mind! You would be amazed at how much you learn with an open mind. Also remember that the things you are learning in this degree will most likely directly impact the lives of hundreds if not thousands of persons in the future.
