What inspired you to study public health?

I was inspired to study public health when I noticed family members neglect their health due to high costs.

What has been the single most rewarding experience of your career/studies so far?

My NYSACHO internship gave me the opportunity to see the policy implementation process and how action, and inaction, creates intentional and unintentional consequences on the population.

Where did you do your practicum? What was it about?

I did my first internship at the NYSDOH Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs Program, where is completed a thematic analysis on the programs activities to see how they fostered health equity and provided best practices and recommendations. My second internship was with the New York State Association of County Health Officials, where I reframed previous and created new advocacy materials that emphasized the importance of public health to NYS lawmakers. I also tracked the updates to the NYS budget and bills introduced by the legislature related to public health issues such as Substance Use Disorder and Environmental Health.

What do you hope to accomplish in your career?

To create and advocate for policies that end health disparities specifically for Black, Brown, and Immigrant communities.
