Cristina Gomez, MPH

University of Michigan School of Public Health
Industrial Hygiene

What inspired you to study public health?

My father received his MPH in Industrial Hygiene from the University of Michigan as well. He worked for 40 years in the field and I grew up observing what he did. He would always come home and tell me stories about how he saved someone’s life at work. He also mentioned to me that this field is not very well known and is an extremely important field to work in. I knew my father would be able to take me under his wing and guide me to be successful in the field. Overall, my father is the one that inspired me to study public health.

What has been the single most rewarding experience of your career/studies so far?

The single most rewarding experience of my career/studies has been the amazing people I have met in Public Health. I learned and grew with these amazing people. I got the chance to meet so many different programs and learn about the amazing work they do for Public Health.

What do you hope to accomplish in your career?

I hope to accomplish a variety of things such as working as a Biosafety Officer for a lab or university, potentially work for an automotive company, or be a consultant. The beauty of industrial hygiene is that there are so many jobs out there for us with very few people to work those jobs so it makes it very easy to find a desirable job.

Advice:

My one piece of advice would to not be afraid to get involved in public health events. The greatest way to learn more about public health is to partake in events and learn new things. There are so many different programs out there in the field of public health.
