Meet Our Assistant Dean of Students- Frederick Smith

Come meet our Assistant Dean of Students Frederick (Fred) Smith! Fred, an Oakland native, holds a bachelor’s degree from Clark Atlanta University and a master’s from Mills College. His career at UC Berkeley began as one of the inaugural advisors and later a supervisor at Cal Student Central. After five years, Fred transitioned to the Haas School of Business, where he served as Associate Director in the Evening/Weekend MBA Program Office before advancing to supervisor of the Faculty Support Unit. In 2021, he became the inaugural manager of academic and instructional support within Data Science Undergraduate Studies in the College of Data Science & Society, and was later promoted to director. Throughout his roles, Fred has gained extensive experience in advising, student support, leadership, and staff development. Fred’s dedication and expertise have earned him numerous accolades, including eight Spot Awards and an Achievement Award. He currently serves as the Chair of the Black Staff and Faculty Organization at UC Berkeley, fostering strong relationships with students, faculty, and staff. On a personal level, Fred is an usher at his church, an enthusiastic Jeopardy fan, and a passionate world traveler and fisherman. Looking ahead, Fred plans to pursue a Ph.D. With his commitment to organizational success and student support, Fred is eager to contribute to enhancing the student experience at UC Berkeley, driven by his strong ethics, values, and faith.
