Career Spotlight: Connecting Transportation & Public Health at the U.S. DOT Volpe Center

The mission of the U.S. Department of Transportation Volpe Center is to advance innovation for the public good. Volpe staff achieves this by providing multidisciplinary, multimodal transportation expertise on behalf of U.S. DOT’s operating administrations, the Office of the Secretary, and other federal agencies, state and local governments, academia, and industry. Three staff from Volpe will share an overview of the Volpe Center, explain how they apply their public health backgrounds to project work, and provide examples of projects taking place at Volpe that cover the public health disciplines.

The U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) established the John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (Volpe Center) in 1970 to serve as a federal resource positioned to provide world-renowned, multidisciplinary, multimodal transportation expertise on behalf of U.S. DOT’s operating administrations, the Office of the Secretary, and other federal agencies, state and local governments, academia, and industry.

Our extensive cross-modal partnerships have led to innovative solutions that advance national and global transportation systems.

Angie Byrne, MPH, MCHES, CPH
Program Analyst, Program Development and Capacity Building
Volpe, The National Transportation Systems Center | U.S. Department of Transportation

Program Analyst in the Program Development and Capacity Building Division at Volpe and has worked in traffic safety for over 15 years for both the Volpe Center and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Her work focuses on surface transportation safety, federal grant programs, and process development and evaluation. She holds a Master’s in Public Health and a Bachelor of Arts degrees from The Ohio State University and is a Master Certified Health Education Specialist and Certified in Public Health.

Jhoset Burgos Rodríguez
Policy Analyst, Policy Analysis and Strategic Planning

Policy Analyst of the Policy Analysis and Strategic Planning Division. Jhoset has worked at the Volpe Center since 2022. His work focuses on environmental permitting and compliance, equity and language accessibility, health and transportation policy, and infrastructure project delivery acceleration. Jhoset holds a law degree from the University of Puerto Rico, a master’s degree in biology and environmental science from the University of Rhode Island, and a bachelor’s degree in integrative biology from the University of Puerto Rico.

Christopher Zevitas
Environmental Engineer, Environmental Science and Engineering
Volpe, The National Transportation Systems Center | U.S. Department of Transportation

Environmental Engineer in the Environmental Science and Engineering Division. He has spent over 35 years in Defense and Transportation addressing environmental and safety concerns. His work focuses on environmental and occupational safety and health, environmental restoration, indoor air quality and healthy building strategies, infectious disease transmission and mitigation, among others. Chris holds a Doctorate of Science in Environmental Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Master of Science in Civil & Environmental Engineering from Northeastern University, and Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

Nick Mahoney, MS
Director of Student and Alumni Engagement
Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) 

Nick Mahoney is the Director of Student and Alumni Engagement at the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) and has been with ASPPH for four years. Before joining the world of academic public health, Nick worked in higher education administration for 12 years, in alumni relations, admissions, and student life. Nick has an MS in Higher Education Administration from Buffalo State University and recently graduated from the distinguished Leadership Greater Washington’s Rising Leaders Program.
