Advocacy Across a Disrupted Public Health Landscape
November 19 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

Join ASPPH for a conversation about how advocacy can drive change in the face of federal inaction. As seen during the government shutdown, states and regions have been increasingly stepping in to make public health recommendations traditionally led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This shift, which some are calling the “balkanization” of public health, has resulted in a fragmented system where approaches and priorities vary widely across the country. At the same time, a growing number of states are proposing or enacting legislation that undermines evidence-based public health policies, further challenging progress toward national health goals.
This ASPPH Presents session will bring together leaders in policy, practice, and public health education to explore where we are now and how our collective voice can drive progress amid these evolving dynamics. Participants will also hear the latest updates on federal public health priorities and funding, including what is at stake for academic public health programs across the country.
Mark Mioduski, Senior Consultant at Cornerstone Government Affairs, will provide a comprehensive update on the latest developments in Washington, DC, and their impact on schools and public health programs.
ASPPH Advocacy Chair, Dr. Boris D. Lushniak, Dean of the University of Maryland School of Public Health, will discuss the importance of advocacy, civic engagement, and leadership in shaping a healthier, more equitable future.
Director of Advocacy and Federal Relations at ASPPH, Beeta Rasouli, will share insights into ASPPH’s ongoing advocacy work and how our efforts are advancing the public health agenda.
The session will be moderated by Tim Leshan, Chief External Relations and Advocacy Officer at ASPPH.
This ASPPH Presents webinar will equip participants with critical updates, inspiration, and practical ways to engage in advocacy efforts that strengthen the voice of academic public health.
We welcome faculty, staff, students, and partners in academic public health who are passionate about advocacy and want to stay informed on federal issues affecting our field to attend.
