ASPPH is proud to welcome Dr. Jonathan Mermin, MD, MPH, as the new Dean of the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and Senior Vice President of Columbia University Irving Medical Center. A nationally and globally recognized public health leader, Dr. Mermin brings decades of experience advancing research, policy, and practice in the service of health equity and scientific excellence.
Dr. Mermin most recently served as Director of the National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and Tuberculosis Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where he oversaw a $1.5 billion budget and a staff of 1,800. In this role, he led national infectious disease prevention efforts, strengthened surveillance and research, and supported health department and community-based programs across the United States and globally. He is also a retired two-star Rear Admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service.
A prolific scholar and dedicated mentor, Dr. Mermin has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed publications and has helped shape federal and global public health strategy through data-driven leadership and cross-sector collaboration.
