I originally wanted to pursue public health because of the passion of those in the field. I was inspired to pursue something larger than myself, something I could do to help my community. Throughout undergrad, I came to love so many aspects of public health, but I also recognized shortcomings in the field and disconnection between policy and practice. This motivated me to pursue a second Bachelor’s degree, this time in Political Science, so that I could better understand the dynamic of public health policy and how it is implemented on a local, state, federal, and global level. My MPH also helped me understand the intricacies of public health policy.
I often found myself at a loss when people would ask “what do you want to do after graduation?” There were so many options and so many paths I could and wanted to pursue. However, at the same time, finding my niche seemed futile due to current affairs and the state we find ourselves in today. Six months after graduating from NYU with my MPH in Global Health, I have found my niche and my passion for community health. I am now employed by my local FQHC in a position that allows me to grow in so many areas of public health that I initially fell in love with. Being grant funded means that my initiatives change every so often, but this allows me to grow my skills in many areas and find other areas of public health that I am passionate about.
