Washington: Doctoral Student Wins WNAR Student Paper Competition

Ms. Natalie Gasca, a fifth-year doctoral student in biostatistics at the University of Washington School of Public Health, recently won Most Outstanding Oral Paper at the 2019 student paper competition hosted by the Western North American Region (WNAR) of the International Biometric Society. She shared first place honors with two other students.

Ms. Gasca presented her paper titled, “Using dimension-reduction methods to identify interpretable diet patterns related to body mass index (BMI) in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.” In her research, she uses statistical methods rarely used in the field of nutritional sciences to identify food and diet patterns related to heart disease.
