Rutgers: Film Selected for 2019 Global Public Health Film Festival

Countdown to Cleaner Air: Street Scientists and the Fight for First Street” has been selected to be screened at the 2019 Global Public Health Film Festival. The festival is part of the American Public Health Association’s Annual Meeting and Expo, which is being held in Philadelphia on November 2-6, 2019.

The film, which was created by filmmaker Ms. Christina Eliopoulos, for the Community Engagement Core of the Rutgers Center for Environmental Exposures and Disease (CEED), was selected from a large number of excellent submissions and was judged to be of high quality and interest.

“Countdown to Cleaner Air” chronicles a campaign of community members from the surrounding Elizabeth Port area to measure diesel truck traffic and local air pollution, culminating in an ordinance to re-route big rigs away from residential neighborhood streets.

“Being selected to show Countdown to Clean Air is a huge honor,” says Dr. Robert Laumbach, associate professor at Rutgers School of Public Health and CEED Community Engagement Director. “We hope that the film will educate other communities near ports or truck routes, leading to similar activism and legislation.”
