Public Health Reports: Childhood Obesity in Georgia

In a recent commentary in Public Health Reports, the former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher, currently at Morehouse School of Medicine, describes his experience with the Georgia Shape initiative which makes use of the data collected under the 2009 Student Health and Physical Education (SHAPE) Act and brings together partners from education, early care and education, business, recreation, agriculture, nutrition, communities, academia, and public health to identify and implement approaches to address childhood obesity statewide in school, health care, and community settings. Dr. Satcher’s commentary introduces the supplemental issue of Public Health Reports featuring research and practice findings presented at the first research symposium on childhood overweight and obesity in Georgia convened in October 2015 by the Georgia Department of Public Health in partnership with the University of Georgia College of Public Health.
