North Texas: Public Health Communications Manager Wins Top National Award for Magazine Article on Domestic Violence

Ms. Sally Crocker, communications manager for the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) School of Public Health, has won first place from Lawrence Ragan Communications, Inc., a PR and corporate communications training company, in the national Ragan’s Health Care PR and Marketing Awards competition, Media – Article category.

Ragan Awards celebrate organizations and individuals who have redefined the field with their groundbreaking work. Ms. Crocker’s story, “Domestic violence’s painful legacy,” was published in the October 2018 issue of Solutions magazine, produced by the UNTHSC Office of Brand and Communication.

The article tells the story of a UNTHSC researcher, who learned that the sister of her future husband had been murdered in an act of domestic violence. The article explored the trauma the family suffered, the work the researcher undertook, inspired by joining a family that had been through such a tragic experience, and the family’s continuing efforts some 30-plus years later to help others through education, support and advocacy.

“The ambitions for this particular article went far beyond provoking a reaction in its audience,” Ragan Communications said. “The article showed in an intimate way how UNTHSC researchers are working to address domestic violence while also shining a light on the work of the Public Health school.”

“Sally set herself apart from an outstanding field of applicants. Her work was exceptional. We look forward to her continued success,” said Mr. Brendan Gannon, Marketing Manager for Awards Programs at Ragan Communications.

Ms. Crocker has worked for the UNTHSC School of Public Health for 10 years.
