Iowa Develops Enhanced Radiological Training with Iowa Homeland Security

To improve its radiological preparedness worker outreach, Iowa Homeland Security & Emergency Management(HSEMD) partnered with the Upper Midwest Preparedness and Emergency Response Learning Center (UMPERLC) out of the University of Iowa College of Public Health to create a more accessible and engaging Web-based training alternative. Working with the Center’s Emergency Preparedness Coordinator and state and local emergency management officials, UMPERLC’s instructional design team developed Basic Radiological Emergency Worker, a short course covering six basic topics: Nuclear Power Plants, Emergency Response Plan, Emergency Classifications, Radiation Principles, Your Role as an Emergency Worker, and Emergency Worker Preparations. The course can be found online at:

According to Mr. Jacob Nicholson, REP program manager at Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management, “Putting the Basic Radiological Emergency Worker course online will improve the readiness of our communities as a whole, making it easier for more responders to prepare for a radiological incident, however unlikely.”
