Dr. Richard Saitz, professor of community health sciences at Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH), has been elected vice president of the International Society of Addiction Journal Editors (ISAJE).
Dr. Saitz is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Addiction Medicine.
Dr. Saitz began his two-year term as vice president in July, after which he will assume the presidency of the ISAJE. He and colleagues at SPH will host the society’s next annual meeting in July 2017.
“This is a real opportunity to influence the scholarly conversation around addiction,” Dr. Saitz says. “Words really matter. For example, use of stigmatizing terms like ‘abuse’ can lead even seasoned clinicians to deliver poor quality care and deter people with these disorders from seeking help. Communicating accurately and respectfully can truly influence and even save lives.”
